Fall on Vancouver Island can change quickly.
One week the weather feels mild and dry. The next, the rain seems to settle in for good.
Before winter really gets underway, it is worth taking a few minutes to walk around the outside of your home and look for anything that seems different, worn or in need of attention.
You do not need to be an exterior renovation expert to do this.
The goal is simply to notice the obvious things before months of wetter weather make them easier to ignore.
Here are five areas worth checking.
1. Gutters and drainage
Start with one of the most obvious places: your gutters.
Falling leaves, needles and other debris can build up quickly during autumn, particularly around homes with mature trees nearby.
Take a look at the gutters and downspouts around the house.
Can you see leaves or debris collecting?
Does anything look loose, bent or out of place?
When it rains, does the water appear to be flowing where you would expect it to?
Gutters are only one part of the home exterior, but they play an important role in directing rainwater away from the roofline.
A simple visual check now can help you identify anything that deserves a closer look before the wettest part of the year.
2. Soffits and the roofline
While you are looking at the gutters, look just above and underneath them too.
Soffits and other roofline details can be easy to overlook because they are not usually at eye level.
Walk around the house and look for anything that appears loose, damaged, stained or noticeably different from the surrounding area.
You may also notice gaps, damaged exterior finishing or other changes that were not obvious during the summer.
Soffits, fascia, gutters and ventilation-related exterior details all form part of the wider roofline, so it makes sense to look at them together rather than separately.
3. Siding and exterior trim
Next, step back and look at the walls of the house.
Siding does more than influence how your home looks. It also forms part of the wider exterior system that helps your home stand up to Vancouver Island weather.
Look for obvious changes such as:
- loose or damaged sections
- cracked or deteriorating areas
- trim that looks worn or damaged
- sections that appear different from the surrounding siding
- visible gaps around exterior details
You are not trying to diagnose every mark or imperfection.
You are simply looking for anything that has changed or stands out.
If something looks noticeably different from the rest of the exterior, it may be worth having it checked.
4. Windows and the areas around them
Windows are another area where several exterior components come together.
Around a typical window, you may have siding, trim and other exterior finishing details meeting in a relatively small space.
Take a look around the edges of your windows from outside.
Does the trim look intact?
Are there any obvious gaps, deterioration or areas that look different from nearby sections?
Have you noticed any exterior finishing that seems to be pulling away or showing signs of wear?
Windows are often considered as a separate home improvement project, but the surrounding exterior details matter too.
If you are already thinking about replacing windows, it can be useful to consider the siding and trim around them at the same time.
5. Places where different exterior materials meet
Finally, look at the transition points around the house.
These are the areas where one exterior material meets another.
That might include:
- siding meeting trim
- siding meeting stonework
- areas around doors and windows
- corners
- roofline transitions
- exterior penetrations or finishing details
These locations can be easy to miss when you are only looking at the larger surfaces of the home.
But they are often where several components of the exterior come together.
If anything looks loose, unfinished, damaged or noticeably different from the surrounding area, make a note of it.
You do not have to know what caused it before asking someone to take a closer look.
A quick fall check does not have to be complicated
The point of a fall exterior check is not to convince yourself that your home needs a major renovation.
Quite often, everything looks fine.
That is useful information too.
A simple walk around the house can help you understand the current condition of your siding, gutters, soffits, windows and exterior details before winter weather becomes more consistent.
And if you do spot something that concerns you, you can deal with it from a position of awareness rather than waiting until it becomes harder to ignore.
Not sure whether something needs attention?
