Gutters and downspouts are some of your best tools for protecting your house from water and moisture damage. If your gutters and downspouts get clogged, they are unable to do their job properly. This means water can overflow and saturate the soil potentially damaging the foundation of your house. Ironically the accessories on your roof are some of the most important factors in protecting the base of your home. Nevertheless, all of this can be avoided with just a few simple precautionary measures.

1. Observations
The best way to know if your rainware is in need of a cleaning is to take a look once in a while. It can be done as simply as getting on a ladder or using a flashlight. An even easier solution is to watch from time to time where the water is dispersing during a rainfall. If water is flowing away from your home then you have nothing to worry about. If water is pooling, a few necessary actions should be taken.

2. Redirect your Downspouts
Your rainwear may not have been properly planned out for your specific location. If you’re finding that it is a particularly rainy season and you are in need of some extra protection, adding a short gutter or downspout extension is an easy way to funnel the water an additional distance from your house. If you are in a particularly “green” mood and wish to save a few bucks on water for your plants or lawn, attaching a rain bucket at the bottom of your downspout is a great way to collect free water for non-drinking purposes.

3. Safety Tip- Be PROACTIVE!
We want you to minimize the work that you have to do and encourages using rainware protection systems like Kaycan’s Proguard II that keep debris out of your gutter. Cleaning gutters and downspouts requires going up on a ladder, which poses unnecessary risks that can easily be avoided with the use of Proguard II.

Getting Down and Dirty

If you still feel like your house is in need of some maintenance, here are the proper ways to address it. The quickest option is to just use your hands or a towel to empty our your gutters. Try and work away from your downspouts to keep away any additional dirt. Once this is done then it is ok to use a hose to push out any remaining debris through the downspouts. Be careful not to overflow any of your raingear and remember to think of safety first when you are going up on the ladder. It is advised to do this with a partner to spot you on the ladder, and give you a hand with the hose and any other tools you are using.
