Now that it is summer, two things have happened. One, the weather is temperate and two there are extended daylight hours. What does that mean?
It means there is more time to tackle some summer upkeep jobs around the exterior of the house. What jobs could possibly need to be done?
Well, new homeowners don’t usually know it when they sign the dotted line, but the house with beautiful horizontal vinyl siding is going to require some upkeep along the way.
For example, the vinyl siding. Regardless of the type, all siding needs to be cleaned yearly. Most types can be cleaned with a power washer, but thin vinyl would need a garden hose with an attachment and a cleaning solution designed for vinyl. It’s a good idea to stay on top of this over the summer, but before one wheels out the pressure washer from the garage look into the thickness of the vinyl siding wrapping around the house.
It would be devastating to blast a hole through a new home’s siding; especially when it could have been preventable.
If it’s an older home or you happen to stumble upon a chipped piece of siding, repair it immediately if at all possible. A person will save themselves an immense amount of money and scrutiny in the long if they commit to a regiment of upkeep jobs and repairs of their home.
Sometimes, when a person purchases a new home that home comes with spare pieces of siding. Ever found that spare room or wandered down to the basement and found paint cans and strips of vinyl lying around? Consider those a house warming present from the previous owners, and when it comes time to replace some of the sidings, there will be a feeling of gratitude that there was some lying around in the basement. If that happens not to be the case, when purchasing new vinyl siding do one’s best plan ahead and be prudent because it will more than likely occur again.
If vinyl is not what wraps around the house and it is a natural wood or painted wood type of siding, perhaps consider restaining or repainting. Stain and paint don’t just offer a decorative look, but also offer protection to the home. Yes, that’s right protection. Wood siding should be repainted every 3-7 years, or stained approximately every 4 years. Don’t know that last time it was painted or stained; then it might be time to look into it.
There are many new types of siding on the market today. A few of the different types are vinyl, wood, fiber cement, stucco, engineered wood siding, and synthetic stone.
If a home’s siding has been in high maintenance for the past several years, or in disrepair, it may be time to explore some options and put a plan in place for some repairs.
